Can I use VR&E or Chapter 31 benefits?
Not yet. Subthesis is pursuing qualified federal-contractor status so that Chapter 31 (VR&E) counselors can authorize its dissertation services for eligible student veterans. That approval isn't in place yet.
What's planned
Once approved, Subthesis aims to deliver four dissertation services directly to eligible Chapter 31 students, billed to VR&E:
- Dissertation Proposal Prep
- Data Analysis and Results
- Final Polish and Dissertation Defense
- Monthly Accountability
The service pages note that a service "may be free for you" once approval is complete.
Who qualifies
Chapter 31 eligibility is decided by the VA, not by Subthesis. Generally, it's for veterans with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% (or 20% with a memorandum rating) and an employment handicap. Your VR&E counselor makes the final determination.
Should I pay now and get reimbursed later?
Subthesis doesn't recommend it. VR&E reimbursement is generally available only for services your counselor authorizes in advance. Instead, email now so your file can be flagged when approval comes through. See How can veterans get help from Subthesis?
