Which browsers work with Subthesis?

The free tools work in current versions of the major browsers, as long as JavaScript is on and the browser lets the site store data. The Research Assistant has two extra requirements.

Free tools

The tools save your work in your browser's IndexedDB storage. If IndexedDB isn't available, they fall back to the browser's localStorage. Private or incognito windows usually erase that storage when you close them, so export anything you want to keep.

Research Assistant

  • Screen size: the Research Assistant is built for desktop and laptop screens. In a window narrower than 1024 pixels, it shows a "Desktop Only" message instead of the app.
  • Local AI: the optional AI features need a browser with WebGPU. The app recommends Chrome 113 or later, Microsoft Edge 113 or later, or Opera 99 or later. It lists Firefox 118 or later and Safari 17 or later as experimental.

Without WebGPU, the Research Assistant still works, but some AI features may be limited or unavailable. See Why does the local AI need WebGPU?
