Where is my tool data saved?

Most tools save your work automatically in your browser, on the device you're using. Your entries aren't uploaded to Subthesis.

How saving works

  • Tools that hold your work, such as the Literature Review Matrix, save to a browser database called ToolStorageDB (IndexedDB). Each tool keeps its own record, named after the tool.
  • Changes are saved a fraction of a second after you type, so there's no Save button to press.
  • If you have the same tool open in two tabs, the tabs stay in sync.
  • If your browser blocks IndexedDB, the tools fall back to the browser's localStorage.

Tools that don't keep your inputs

Some quick calculators and selectors, such as the Effect Size Calculator, don't save between visits. Use their export or copy buttons if you want to keep a result.

What this means for you

Because your work lives in one browser on one device, it won't appear on another computer or in a different browser, and clearing your browser's site data deletes it. Export a copy regularly. See How do I export my tool results?
